Two high-profile failures — a luxury Huawei-JAC sedan's brake bracket snapping in tests and a Chery SUV's rear axle tearing off in Malaysia — have overseas buyers asking whether Chinese cars are rushed to market.
Chinese brands made up roughly 30% of the vehicle exhibitors at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, pushing into Europe's toughest market. Volkswagen's CEO called for European carmakers to band together as the competition arrives at their doorstep.
A 2023 OMODA 5 in Malaysia lost its rear axle mid-drive, prompting Chery to recall 8,878 vehicles over weak welds on the rear suspension arm. The Chinese automaker apologized as it pushes hard into export markets.
China is now the world's largest vehicle exporter, led by electric and plug-in hybrid cars from BYD, Chery and a wave of younger brands — a shift with big consequences for car prices everywhere.
