Lazio Hit Sassuolo for Six to Reach Serie A Summit

Lazio made the strongest possible case for their title credentials on Tuesday night, thrashing ten-man Sassuolo 6-2 at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia to move top of Serie A with 25 points from nine matches and a five-match winning run.

The visitors were relentless from the opening whistle. Taylor opened the scoring and then turned provider, setting up Isaksen and Floriani as Lazio raced into a three-goal lead before the half-hour mark. Sassuolo pulled one back through Torstvedt, but the home side’s hopes of a comeback collapsed when he was sent off shortly afterwards, leaving Sassuolo to play the rest of the match a man short.

Even so, the hosts briefly made it interesting. Esposito and Zakani traded goals before the interval, sending Lazio into the break with a 4-2 cushion and the game still alive in theory. In practice, the second half belonged entirely to the visitors.

Zakani, who had already scored and assisted twice, had the chance to add to his tally from the penalty spot but missed. Frattesi was also denied from twelve yards as Lazio squandered two spot kicks in quick succession. It mattered little. Noslin, who had come off the bench, scored twice to complete the rout and underline the depth available to the Lazio coach.

The result leaves Lazio unbeaten after nine rounds, with eight wins and one draw, and temporarily clear at the top of the table. The margin at the summit may shrink once the weekend’s fixtures are complete, but the statement is unmistakable: this is a side built to compete on multiple fronts.

For Sassuolo, the evening was a harsh lesson in the cost of indiscipline. Torstvedt’s red card turned a difficult assignment into an impossible one, and a defence that had conceded only sporadically this season suddenly shipped six goals at home. The club will need to regroup quickly, with the fixture list offering little respite.

Zakani’s performance was the standout individual note. A goal and two assists before half-time, plus the willingness to step up for a penalty he ultimately missed, captured a player in the best form of his career. His link-up with Taylor and Isaksen gave Lazio a fluidity that Sassuolo simply could not handle.

Lazio’s supporters, who have waited years for a genuine title challenge, will be cautious about reading too much into one night. But eight wins from nine, a five-match winning streak and a three-point buffer at the top are the kind of numbers that demand attention. The next few weeks will reveal whether this is a hot streak or something more durable.
