Apple's First Foldable iPhone Duo: $2,200 Price, $1,100 Screen Repair

Apple’s first foldable phone finally has a price tag — and a repair bill to match. The iPhone Duo, unveiled at the company’s autumn 2026 launch event, goes on pre-order on October 16 at 8pm and hits shelves on October 23, starting at 15,999 yuan (roughly $2,200). That places it well above any iPhone Apple has sold before, and firmly in the luxury tier of the foldable market.
What caught attention this week was not the hardware but the service page. Apple has published its estimated repair costs for the Duo, and the numbers are striking. A damaged inner display is estimated at 7,998 yuan — about half the price of a brand-new device. Battery service runs 1,898 yuan, rear camera damage 1,798 yuan, and replacing the back glass 1,598 yuan. Even a surface-level mark is listed at 398 yuan. For a phone that folds, the hinge and the flexible panel are the parts most likely to fail, and they are also the parts owners can least afford to break.
Foldables have always been expensive to fix, but the Duo’s figures sharpen the question of who these devices are actually for. A buyer who drops the phone once could face a repair bill approaching the cost of a mid-range flagship. That math has pushed some commentators to describe the Duo as a device best kept in a case, on a desk, and away from children.
Apple is arriving late to a category that Samsung, Huawei and several Chinese brands have spent years developing. Huawei’s foldable line has been a fixture in China’s premium market, and Samsung has iterated through multiple generations. Apple’s entry signals that the company believes the form factor has finally matured enough for its mainstream audience — or at least for the portion of that audience willing to pay a premium for it.
The Duo’s pricing also lands in a Chinese market that has grown more competitive than ever. Domestic brands now offer folding phones at a wide range of price points, and consumers have become used to comparing specifications closely. Apple’s advantage has traditionally been software, ecosystem lock-in and resale value, not price. Whether that is enough to justify a repair schedule this costly will be tested in the coming months.
For global readers, the Duo is a useful signal about where the smartphone industry is heading. After years of incremental camera upgrades, manufacturers are searching for a new reason to make people replace their phones. Folding screens are one answer. Making them durable, affordable to own and cheap to fix is the harder part — and Apple’s own service page suggests the industry has not solved it yet.
Pre-orders open on October 16, with deliveries starting a week later. Early buyers will be watching two numbers: the one on the receipt, and the one they hope never to see on a repair invoice.
