China's Arthouse Weekend: '去你的岛' Leads a Crowded Release Slate
Chinese cinemas this week are absorbing one of the year’s more crowded release slates, and the early scoreboards suggest audiences are being choosy. The highest-rated new arrival on the country’s main film-rating platform is 去你的岛, a 119-minute mainland romance drama directed by 周浩然, sitting at 7.5. Close behind is 活色生香, a 106-minute ensemble piece directed by 罗冬 and built around three well-known actresses — 闫妮, 叶童 and 倪虹洁 — at 7.0.
The two films represent different bets. 去你的岛 leans on a single director’s vision and a young cast, while 活色生香 trades on familiar faces and a title that promises texture and flavour. For a market that has spent much of the year debating whether star power still sells tickets, the gap between 7.5 and 7.0 is small enough that word of mouth, not the opening weekend, will decide which one lasts.
Animation accounts for a large share of the new entries. 落凡尘, a 118-minute mainland animated feature directed by 钟鼎, arrives without a score yet, as does 红孩儿火焰山之王, a retelling drawn from the classic Journey to the West cycle, directed by 何状志, 文静 and 谢嘉业. Family audiences also get 小猪佩奇·完美假期, an 88-minute China-UK co-production of the Peppa Pig franchise directed by 刘源, which has opened at 6.2.
The international contingent is led by 小羊肖恩3：怪兽来袭, the latest Shaun the Sheep stop-motion film from the UK, running 81 minutes and directed by 史蒂夫·考克斯 and 马修·沃克. The American thriller 鲸口脱险, directed by 布莱恩·达菲尔德 and starring 奥斯汀·艾布拉姆斯, 乔什·布洛林 and 伊丽莎白·苏, opened at 6.2 over 106 minutes. Keanu Reeves returns to Chinese screens in a 101-minute re-release of 疾速追杀, the first John Wick film, directed by 查德·斯塔赫斯基.
Horror and suspense fill out the low-budget end. 阴阳路惊魂, directed by 徐俊, and 民宿惊魂, directed by 宋小君 and set around a guesthouse, both arrive unscored, the kind of titles that rely on genre fans and quick turnover rather than reviews. 勇敢女孩合唱团, a mainland drama directed by 邵兵 and featuring 王砚辉 and 李浩菲, also enters without a rating.
The spread of scores is itself the story. A 7.5 top mark is respectable but not runaway, and several films have no rating at all — a sign that platforms only publish scores once enough users have voted. In a market where a single strong title can dominate screens for weeks, a slate this fragmented gives exhibitors flexibility but leaves each film fighting for attention.
For global readers, the list is a useful map of what Chinese audiences are actually offered in a normal week: domestic romance and animation, a British children’s import, an American action re-release and micro-budget horror, all competing for the same screens.
