iFlytek's New Platform Wants Tokens to Pay Their Way

iFlytek used its annual 1024 Developer Festival, opened on October 22 at Beijing’s National Convention Center, to launch a bundle of products aimed at turning AI usage into billable, measurable work. Chairman Liu Qingfeng introduced the Spark X2.6 model, which runs across devices and the cloud, alongside the company’s first Star TaaS platform, a voice foundation model called SparkAudio 1.0 and a multimodal model for embodied machines.

The centerpiece is the Token-as-a-Service idea. Rather than selling software licenses, iFlytek wants to meter AI output in tokens and sell that capacity into sectors such as education, healthcare, customer service and manufacturing, where Chinese firms are under pressure to show returns on their AI spending. The company has long positioned itself as a domestic alternative in speech and language technology, and pairing a device-cloud model with a voice base reflects where it sees the most immediate commercial demand.

The launch lands in a crowded field. Chinese developers can already choose from a wide spread of large language model offerings, many priced aggressively, and enterprises have grown skeptical of pilots that never reach production. iFlytek’s answer is to frame tokens as a utility that plugs into existing workflows, with the developer festival serving as its shop window to independent programmers and corporate buyers alike.

Whether the platform wins will depend less on benchmark scores than on whether customers keep buying tokens month after month.
