China's EVs Prove More Reliable at High Mileage

Electric vehicles manufactured in China are demonstrating exceptional reliability at high mileage, according to new analysis of British car inspection data. The study examined 47.4 million MOT test records and found that when cars reach 90,000-120,000 miles, Chinese electric vehicles had a failure rate 25% lower than comparable gasoline models.

This discovery comes as Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers continue to expand their global footprint. The reliability data provides compelling evidence for international consumers considering the switch to electric mobility, particularly in markets where concerns about long-term EV durability persist. The findings could significantly influence purchasing decisions in Europe and North America where Chinese EV brands are increasingly competitive.

Chinese automakers have invested heavily in quality control and battery technology in recent years. The data suggests these investments are paying dividends in real-world conditions where vehicle longevity matters most to consumers. Unlike many previous studies that focused on laboratory conditions or short-term performance, this analysis examines actual vehicle performance over extended periods of use.

The study reveals an interesting pattern: at lower mileage levels, the reliability difference between electric and gasoline vehicles is minimal. However, as mileage increases beyond 90,000 miles, the electric vehicles maintain their performance while gasoline counterparts show increasing signs of wear. This trend becomes even more pronounced at mileage exceeding 120,000 miles, where electric vehicles show a 32% lower failure rate.

One notable challenge identified in the analysis is that electric vehicles experience tire wear at twice the rate of gasoline vehicles. This finding highlights an area for improvement in EV design and engineering. The British MOT tests did not evaluate battery health, leaving unanswered questions about long-term battery degradation which remains a key concern for many potential EV buyers.

As China’s electric vehicle industry continues to mature, these reliability metrics could become a significant competitive advantage in global markets. The combination of improving reliability, competitive pricing, and expanding charging infrastructure is positioning Chinese manufacturers as serious contenders in the transition to sustainable transportation worldwide.
